Draymond Green Struggled To Deal With Stardom

Mar 19, 2012 9:46 PM

Draymond Green struggled to cope with the fame and attention that comes with being considered for national awards.

“When you hear about those things, I'm not really the type that's about individual awards, but those are great accomplishments,” Green said. “When you hear about those things, of course you want them to happen.

"I'm sitting there thinking what can possibly happen, what can possibly go wrong. It was really stopping me from being me, being the happy person that I am around my teammates, just always having a smile on my face.”

Green admitted he “wasn’t himself” and sought out the counsel of Tom Izzo.

“Behind closed doors I still have my times where, ‘Hey, what do I need to do?’ Because I'm not perfect,” Green said. “I still have a lot of things I can get better on. And I have a mastermind as a coach. I can always get some advice.”

Draymond Green Received Words Of Advice From Magic Johnson

Mar 18, 2012 1:34 PM

Magic Johnson called Michigan State coach Tom Izzo last week and Draymond Green happened to be sitting in the office.

“I said, ‘Draymond's here, why don't you talk to him?’” Izzo said.

Johnson led Michigan State to the national championship in 1979.

“He was talking about, ‘It’s one-and-done time,’ and rallying the troops and told me some things to better myself individually but also to better the team,” Green said. “What to say, some things to say to the guards, also talking to Derrick Nix and Adreian Payne on how they have to hold the fort down in order for us to make a run.

“So just those type of things, the things that a guy who’s been through it all, who has won championships, know what it takes to get there, and just sharing his experience with us. That’s what the family is all about -- helping each other out.”

Green recorded a triple-double in the Spartans’ 89-67 victory over Long Island University on Friday, joining Johnson and Oscar Robertson as the only players in tournament history to have more than one triple-double in tournament play.

Draymond Green Thrives Under National Spotlight

Mar 2, 2012 10:31 AM

Draymond Green has scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in three of Michigan State’s past four games, solidifying his status a leading Big Ten Player of the Year candidate while garnering a few straw poll votes in the race for national honors. Green admits all of the increased attention was wearing on him.

"It wasn't necessarily that it was bothering my play. It was starting to bother me as a person," said Green, who who has averaged more than 19 points per game since scoring just five in a Jan. 31 loss at Illinois. "I wasn't me. I wasn't the fun guy to be around, just all excited. It was kind of weighing down on me because you're worried about so many things."

Green spoke with coach Tom Izzo earlier this week about how to handle the season's final stretch.

"Coach told me you just have to keep doing what you're doing," Green said. "That kind of relieved me. Because when you start to let all those things get to you, it can take the fun from it.

"I'm not going to lie and say it doesn't matter to me. It'd be an honor to win Big Ten Player of the Year. But, that's not my focus. My focus is to come out there and win games and win an outright Big Ten championship."
